The Upper Peninsula is dotted with multiple ski resorts that have turned this area into one of the top skiing destinations in the world. While having so many choices of places to ski is excellent, you might find yourself freezing up when it comes to making a decision on where to go. Narrowing down your options to the main top three helps you to dive a little deeper into how each one could fit your specific needs.

Some resorts are known as being the perfect destination for beginners who can benefit from having access to smaller slopes and opportunities to sign up for lessons. Other resorts cater to advanced skiers looking for big thrills that allow them to refine their skills. Wherever you fall within the skiing community’s spectrum of abilities, you’ll find that there is a place for you and your skiing buddies. Now, all you have to do is check out these prospective skiing destinations to begin feeling confident about planning your trip.

Pine Mountain Resort
As the name suggests, the Pine Mountain Resort is surrounded by gorgeous pines that fill the area with a sense of tranquility that you’ll enjoy as you head to the slopes. The resort’s lodging options include rooms with a rustic, unassuming style that blends in with the picturesque wilderness view that you can enjoy from your window. Or, you might opt to stay in one of the ski-in-and-ski-out condos. The resort is also known for having the best jumping hills in the entire U.S., which draws ski jumpers from all over the world to the area to participate in competitions and training.

While you can expect to run into quite a few advanced-level skiers, you can also feel comfortable as a beginner. The resort is incredibly family-friendly, which they demonstrate by offering free skiing for children under eight years of age and those older than 75. The resort is also only a few hours away from popular skiing destinations, such as Porcupine Mountain. Many skiers choose to also take an overnight trip to Ironwood Hotels, where they can enjoy comfortable lodging while they tour the Upper Peninsula area before heading home or back to the resort.

Big Powderhorn Mountain Resort
If you’ve already been exploring where to stay in Ironwood, you might have come across one of the other top three places to ski in the Upper Peninsula. Big Powderhorn Mountain Resort is expansive, and you can find many different things to enjoy on the 253 skiable acres you’ll have access to here. The resort is an excellent place for beginners to learn their skills on safe, groomed slopes, and you can even take advantage of an introductory package that includes your rental gear and lift tickets.

When you’re ready to head out on your own, you’ll find that the multiple trails are divided up into an almost even number of ones that are meant for novice, intermediate, and advanced skiers. If you’re fairly new to skiing, then the Trigger and Big Bird runs are known for being great places for beginners to build their confidence. While you can always stay at one of the many vacation homes, chalets, and condos that are offered at the resort, many people opt to stay in Upper Peninsula hotels that cater to skiers and offer an affordable place to rest and soak up the small town atmosphere that exists in nearby cities, such as Ironwood.

Snow River Mountain Resort
When you’re staying in Ironwood Hotels, you only need to drive about 20 minutes to get to this resort, which has 410 skiable acres and 56 trails. The resort covers two mountains, and each one offers different events and activities for people to enjoy throughout the year.

Your lift ticket gives you access to both mountains along with the chance to take part in some off-the-slope activities that include a snow tubing slide, bungee trampoline, along with an indoor jacuzzi and pool. The live music scene is also one of this resort’s claims to fame, and there are also opportunities to go on moonlit snowshoeing adventures when you want to extend your time enjoying the snowy wilderness.

Consider Adding These Additional Skiing Excursions to Your Itinerary
The best Upper Peninsula hotels are in close proximity to several different resorts, which allows you to have your pick of where you want to spend your days. During your visit, you might also decide to mix things up by visiting the Porkies Winter Sports Complex or the Mount Zion Recreational Sports Complex that both offer family friendly fun.

The Mount Zion Recreational Sports Complex is located in Ironwood and is recognized as being the oldest recreational complex to be built in the Big Snow Country. Owned and operated by Gogebic College, the student-manned complex offers some of the best beginner ski and snowboarding lessons around, along with a free cross-country skiing trail.

When the Porcupine Mountains are your destination, then you’ll also want to stop at the Porkies Winter Sports Complex. Here, you’ll find gorgeous downhill and cross-country skiing trails along with places to go snowboarding and snowshoeing. The complex even has a new webcam system set up that allows you to check out the weather in real-time before you head out for the short drive from Ironwood Hotels.

Fortunately, you don’t have to think too much about where to stay during your trip since our two hotels in Ironwood are skier-friendly and even offer you amenities such as a ski wax station.

During the ski season, you will want to note that hotels, restaurants, and entertainment venues tend to fill up fast. Make sure to book your reservations for each part of your trip early, and get ready to enjoy all of the beauty that the Upper Peninsula has to offer for anyone who enjoys skiing on fresh powder.
