BEST PLACES IN IRONWOOD

Explore & Adventure

A year-round playground for the whole family, there are endless paths, roads, and shorelines to explore on your visit to Ironwood.

Copper Peak Ski Jump

Copper Peak Ski Jump

The best view in all of the Upper Peninsula! This is especially true during peak fall colors. The Copper Peak Jump was once one of the tallest ski jumps in the United States and was recently granted $20 million for restoration and development. This means in the future; Ironwood will once again become a training center for top athletes.

Visitors to the jump can take a chairlift to the base and then an elevator up to the top for an incredible 360-degree view of the surrounding area. One of the best times to take in the view is October, when fall colors are at their peak.

Lake Superior

The largest and most pristine of the Great Lakes, Lake Superior is truly a natural world wonder. The summer water temperature averages just 66 degrees, making it the perfect place to cool off and refresh on hot days. Pack a picnic and head up to Little Girl’s Beach for a day of fun and rock hunting.

The shoreline is also ideal for kayaking, paddle boarding, and rock hunting. Fun fact: Lake Superior is the only known location in the world to find Yooperlites, a distinct rock that glows in the dark under blacklight.

Waterfalls

There are over 42 waterfalls that can be visited within a 1.5-hour drive of Ironwood. Our favorites include Interstate Falls, Superior Falls, Gabbro Falls, Potawatomi Falls, and Agate Falls. The falls range and size and are also perfect adventures for kids and pets. No matter which you visit, there is beauty in each all year long!

Before you leave, download trails and offline maps. The Upper Peninsula is remote, meaning service can be sparse, especially in locations where waterfalls are present.

Mountain Biking

The Upper Peninsula is becoming one of the best areas to mountain bike in the Eastern United States. Ironwood has 33 miles of mountain biking trails, including 4 easy trails, seven intermediate trails, and two difficult trails. No matter your level of mountain biking experience, there are options for all.

The most well-known mountain biking trails in Ironwood circle the area of the Copper Peak Ski Jump, which includes a non-technical 5.5 mile with 600 feet of elevation gain. You can view the trail map here.

Porcupine Mountains

Located just a short drive from Ironwood is Michigan’s only mountain range – the Porcupine Mountains. The area is fantastic for hiking, backpacking, and exploring through spring, summer, and fall. The perfect itinerary for the Porkies includes a fuel-up at Copper Cup leaving town, a stop at Lake of the Clouds, and a visit to Summit Peak.

Lake of the Clouds is the most popular viewpoint in the area, with an elevated view of the valley and lakes below. On the other side of the range, Summit Peak is a lookout tower that allows you to stand on one of the highest points in Michigan.

Winter Activities

Ironwood averages 166 inches of snowfall a year, making it one of the snowiest places in the United States. Because of this, it is the perfect location to enjoy winter activities such as snowmobiling, downhill skiing, snowshoeing, and nordic skiing.

The area includes over 2,000 miles of snowmobiling trails, four ski hills, and endless nordic skiing opportunities in the surrounding national forest. Snowmobile trails can take one all the way to the Keweenaw Peninsula or far beyond the Michigan border into northern Wisconsin.
